Located in the remote northern region of Sri Lanka, Mannar is a place of stunning natural beauty, yet it carries the scars of decades of conflict and ongoing hardship.

Mannar is home to the Tamil minority, a community long subjected to marginalization and discrimination. While the majority of the country speaks Sinhalese and practices Buddhism, the people of Mannar speak Tamil and follow a rich tapestry of faiths — including Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam.

Since the end of the civil war in 2009, the region has remained deeply underserved. Unpaved roads, modest homes, and limited access to clean water and

electricity shape the daily realities of life. Most families survive through subsistence fishing or farming, with few opportunities for economic stability or growth.

In this challenging context, the De La Salle Brothers have become a steadfast presence of hope and opportunity.
