Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with one in two people suffering from hunger. Since 2024, the situation —already critical due to political and economic instability and environmental disasters—has worsened drastically because of rising armed violence. Criminal gangs are destroying infrastructure and limiting access to healthcare, education, clean water, and food.

In this context, La Salle schools remain open, serving as essential points of stability and hope. Among them is École Saint Jean Baptiste de La Salle in Port-de-Paix, which serves 350 vulnerable children. Many come from families that send them to work in the city in exchange for domestic services, often resulting in mistreatment, malnutrition, and deprivation of basic necessities.

Some arrive in tears, wearing torn clothes and shoes, with the Brothers often personally providing clothing and footwear.

The school provides them with a healthy and nutritious meal every day, which is often the only meal they have that day. In this way, we not only ensure their fundamental right to adequate nutrition, but also encourage school attendance and concentration in the classroom. Because there can be no education without food, and children cannot learn on an empty stomach.

Providing a safe, welcoming, and nourishing environment is the first step toward a dignified future, free from abuse and exploitation, and toward forming citizens who can help rebuild Haiti.
