What Are Cookies?

A “cookie” is a text file saved on the user’s computer when they access a website, with the purpose of providing information each time the user returns to that same site. It serves as a sort of reminder of the web page visited. Through the cookie, the web server sends information to the user’s browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.) that is stored on the user’s computer; this information will be read and updated each time the user returns to the site. In this way, the website can automatically adapt to the user. While browsing, the user may also receive cookies from other websites (“third-party” cookies) on their device; these are set directly by the operators of those websites and used for the purposes and in the manner defined by them.
Depending on their duration, cookies are classified as session cookies (i.e., temporary cookies that are automatically deleted from the device at the end of the browsing session when the browser is closed) and persistent cookies (i.e., cookies that remain stored on the device until they expire or are deleted by the user). Based on their function and purpose, cookies can be divided into technical cookies and profiling cookies.

Technical Cookies

Some cookies are used for user authentication, session tracking, and storing specific information about users who access a web page. These so-called “technical” cookies are often necessary to allow you to navigate a website and use all of its features. Technical cookies are those whose use does not require the user’s consent. Analytics cookies also fall into this category. These are cookies that collect information about how a user interacts with a website and help improve its performance. For example, analytics cookies show which pages are visited most frequently, allow us to identify recurring patterns of website usage, and help us understand any difficulties users encounter while using the site.

Profiling Cookies

Other cookies, on the other hand, may be used to track and profile users as they browse, analyze their movements and web browsing or consumption habits (what they buy, what they read, etc.), including for the purpose of sending targeted and personalized advertisements for services. These are known as profiling cookies. The use of such cookies requires the prior acquisition of the user’s free and informed consent in accordance with Article 7 of EU Regulation 2016/679 and applicable national legislation.

Third-Party Cookies

It may also happen that a web page contains cookies from other sites embedded in various elements hosted on the page itself, such as advertising banners, images, videos, maps, or specific links to web pages on other domains that reside on servers different from the one hosting the requested page. In other words, these cookies are set directly by website operators or servers other than this website. In these cases, we are referring to so-called third-party cookies, which are typically used for profiling purposes. The use of these cookies requires the prior acquisition of the user’s free and informed consent.
